Robena
Robena’s journey into the world of Art has been a very personal and singularly unique one, as she is self-taught in both style and technique - resulting in an approach to painting that has produced artwork of exceptional beauty and grace.
Robena applies acrylic washes, layers upon layers of them on raw canvas, essentially building her paintings from the canvas out. Influenced by Dick Nelson - a student of Joseph Albers, the color theorist - Robena only uses the primary colors to create her palette, as Cyan, Magenta, and Yellow, are masterfully blended together to create artwork that is extraordinarily illuminating in size, perspective, and presence.
Robena's use of color and composition result in paintings that capture and reflect light, as she is focused on, and inspired by, how light responds to passing through glass. Robena is intrigued by this phenomenon and when she combines this with the varying compositional elements of time and place, man and nature, structure and fluidity, this resource gives her inspiration for continuous exploration and excitement.
Robena paints with a loose, relaxed stroke, and her current work continues to discover the dynamic relationships between glass, color, and light with highly attractive and compelling imagery. Recognized as an accomplished artist; Robena lives on Maui and was honored with the Image of the Year at the 2014 Art Maui, has headlined dozens of solo shows, participated in scores of group shows, and is represented by galleries throughout the country.
Robena's paintings hang in residential, commercial, and public venues, across the nation and around the world.
