Maui sculptor, Steve Turnbull, creates a symphony of line that flows in harmony with nature a reflection of his birthplace, Seattle, west of the Cascade Mountains in Washington State. Washington's west side has long been noted for lush forests, long uninterrupted shorelines and vast mountain ranges hosting a diverse and abundant range of wildlife, on both land and sea. From these surroundings you will understand his statement about his art: "I hope to enrich, educate, and motivate the next generation to really see and to preserve the beauty of our environment."
Spanning several generations, Steve's upbringing moved him to appreciate and respect nature for its power, beauty, and balance. "I thank my parents and grandparents who gave me the upbringing and confidence to believe in myself. I was able to take the steps to break out of the safe world to express my artistic ability". From his earliest years Steve was fond of celebrating nature in a unique fashion.
Steve's diverse training has taken him to the island of Maui, where his talent was first identified by Master Sculptor Bruce Turnbull. Steve places great importance on the relationship developed with his uncle where he began sculpting in 1984 taking an apprenticeship with him on Maui.
Soon after his apprenticeship began he was drawn towards creating his own work. For the next several years his time was divided between sculpting and obtaining a BFA degree from the University of Washington's graphic design school in 1991. "Knowing my life work would be devoted to sculpture, I applied the formal design training I received in college to create a uniqueness that is seen in my work today."
Steve Turnbull's sculpture flows in harmony with nature. He strives to enhance our environment by capturing the natural beauty within the medium, bringing form to life. Whether symbolizing the flight of an eagle or the power of the moving tide, Steve hopes to enrich his viewers lives with his art. I am inspired by what I see in nature and try to capture that perfection, never pretending to have the power to create the exact scene or object. My art is simple, clean, beautiful, and true to what I believe in!
Steve works with wood, stone, and bronze. He subtracts elements within the medium to bring the form to life, often leaving portions of the piece in their natural state. Patrons have become accustomed to the warmth projected by each Turnbull original. Combining these elements, Steve lends his skilled hands collaborating with nature's own creative instinct.
Currently, Steve lives on Maui. His works have been shown in galleries in Washington, Oregon, California, and Maui. Private and public collections of his work span the West Coast, Hawaii, and Canada. Lahaina Galleries is proud to represent Steve Turnbull and his beautiful art.
