Jan Kasprzycki

"I think it's an artist's job to touch on those realms of the world which others cannot see, and then show it to them. The realms which speak most symphonically to me are color and movement. And those are the ones I attempt to transfer to my canvases." — Jan Kasprzycki
There is something magnetic about a Jan Kasprzycki painting. Perhaps it is the emotion that leaps from the canvas or the rich feast of colors he creates in sumptuous impastos. His works possess a vitality of their own—a remarkable, unique quality that captivates the viewer.
Like the legendary French Impressionists, Kasprzycki (pronounced kas-pris'-key) is captivated by the wonders of light. His paintings evoke their mystical spell in radiant flower scenes, cityscapes pulsing with electric energy, and portraits that delve beneath the surface. Passion is at the heart of his work; it is the emotion his paintings convey.
Born in Pawtucket, Rhode Island, and raised in Southern California, Jan Kasprzycki moved to Maui in 1976. Surrounded by the island's upcountry grandeur, with eucalyptus and protea, he and his wife Kathy find inspiration in the clarity and purpose of their powerful environment. Each brushstroke is an emotional act, as textures curl and wave in wild profusion. His compositions are both abstract (in detail) and representational (in subject matter), united by a singular force—color.
"I'm a colorist. It is color that takes my hand and tells it what to do." — Jan Kasprzycki
