Hurricane Dora is forcast to pass far south of the Hawaiian islands, National Weather Service issues several weather alerts, including a red flag warning which means stronger winds and drier conditions could lead to fire hazards.

Brush fire is reported upcountry prompting evacuations in several communities. The fire scorches over 1,000 acres of land in Olinda & Kula.

Strong winds down power lines. A posted video on Youtube shows powerful winds knocking down power lines into dry brush, igniting a row of flames, winds of 50-70 mph were reported at this time on some parts of Maui.

Brush fire is reported up Lahainaluna Road near the Lahaina Intermediate School. Hale Mahaolo and Lahaina Bypass are evacuated. Multiple roads are also closed due to power lines... Less than three hours later the brush fire is declared 100% contained.

An apparent flareup again of the Lahainaluna fire begins burning a housing development near the school. The fire forces the closure of the Lahaina Bypass. Evacuations take place for residents in areas of Lahainaluna Road, Hale Mahauolu and Lahaina Bypass. Witnesses report uncontrollable flames ripping through the community.

FLAMES DESTOY HISTORIC LAHAINA TOWN
High winds push embers downhill at alarming rates to the south and west toward the Kahoma area, on to the coast and the heart of town. Footage of flames out of control in Lahaina are seen in videos with strong winds and heavy smoke billowing in the air, abandoned or stuck vehicles line the roads with reports of loud explosions going on. People flee to the ocean.

Multiple road closures are reported, along with bottlenecks on the northbound highway. Fleeing residents in cars are trapped in flames.

Maui County reports multiple structures have burned and evacuations are in place.
August 8, 2023 - 7:00pm
Hawaii News begins receiving reports that hundreds of people have jumped into the ocean off Front Street to escape the flames.
August 8, 2023 - 8:00pm
U.S. Coast Guard reports that it has deployed a MH-65 Dolphin aircrew and a small boat crew to Front Street Beach and Lahaina Harbor area in response to the fires.

The U.S. Coast Guard reports rescuing 14 people from the waters off Lahaina.

During the fires, Lahaina resident, Dan Nelson, a former firefighter in California, stayed back to save his home and neighborhood.
After two days without sleep for 48 hours, Dan jumped on his bike and filmed the aftermath on downtown, Front Street.
