The artwork of Alexei Butirskiy takes us to a place where we can find comfort and serenity. Whether sitting by the water's edge during a winter sunset or perched above the historic rooftops of his beloved Moscow, Alexei Butirskiy reminds us all to look for the beauty in the world around us.
Butirskiy is dedicated to representing urban life around him in truthful and unpolished terms. A sense of tranquility and solitude is conveyed in each of his paintings. His scenes are generally without action or conviviality, and many are uncannily still, with only light, space, shadows, and color offering dialogue. Tinged with a bit of fantasy, his works are clean and pure.
The power and intensity of the relationship between light and dark are the profound forces of his work. The sophisticated application of light and color reinforce the majesty of his compositions. Butirskiy's paintings are reminiscent of the works of Claude de Lorraine and Caravaggio with their luminescent qualities and skillful variations of light and dark. Also, although this artist is unaware of the works of Edward Hopper, his paintings have a similar manner and style.
There’s an intriguing, Alfred Hitchcock quality and an overall lavender blue aura in his paintings. Northern Hemispheric skies and purple trees bear subtle witness to his talent for realism. His brushstrokes are light, feathery, and expressive. A warm, amber light shines through the windows in his stark, wintry cityscapes, evoking curiosity about the unseen inhabitants, giving a "Rear Window" intrigue to these paintings.
Born in Moscow in 1974, Butirskiy studied at the Moscow Art College and graduated with an Excellence Diploma. He then attended the Russian Academy of Arts, where his style evolved under the guidance of Professor LS Hasyanova. By 1996, he was participating in numerous exhibitions throughout Russia, including the Russian Union of Artists, the Moscow Union of Artists, and the Art-Salon at the Manezh in Moscow. After quickly becoming one of Russia’s top-emerging artists in the late 90’s, Butirskiy began to exhibit his work in galleries and private collections throughout the Europe and the United States, becoming an international success and recognized as a Master Artist.
Tranquil and expressive, fresh and refined, individual and original, Lahaina Galleries is proud to represent the works of this young genius.
